Prof. Dr. Syeda Farida Batool is a Lahore-based visual artist whose work delves into the political upheavals and complex history of Pakistan, while addressing global challenges. Through a multimedia approach, she explores identity, gender, and the everyday cultural realities within patriarchal structures. Batool’s work captures the essence of urban life as a flâneur, observing and dissecting the multiple layers of identity that exist within the city and its cultural dynamics. Her artistic journey has seen her exhibit widely, both locally and internationally, in prestigious group and solo shows, reflecting her profound engagement with contemporary issues. Farida Batool received her BA in Fine Arts from the National College of Arts, Lahore, an MA in Art History and Theory from the College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales, and a PhD from the Centre for Media Studies at SOAS, London. In addition to her artistic endeavors, she has been an educator since 1997 and is currently the Dean of Faculty of Humanities at the National College of Arts, Lahore. A passionate advocate for art in public spaces, Batool is an active member of the Awami Art Collective, a group committed to promoting peaceful coexistence through artistic discourse in public arenas. Her work in this collective includes community workshops, awareness programs for women in both urban and rural areas, and facilitating cultural and political dialogue across different communities in Pakistan. She has presented her research at international conferences, including Yale University, Oxford University, and St. Joseph’s University, Philadelphia, among others.
